  • Gerard Delfgaauw

The Dutch painter Gerardus Johannes Delfgaauw (1882-1947) lived and worked in Rijswijk since 1914. He was self-taught and was mainly concerned with the impressionistic-naturalistic style. He usually worked in the vicinity of Rotterdam and The Hague, where he painted impressive landscapes, city and harbor views and winter scenes.

    Popular
Delfgaauw's work was already highly appreciated in his time. His work was requested to order through Kunsthandel van Gessel.

    Documentation
The painting 'Cargo ship in the port of Rotterdam' is also depicted on de website about the life and work of Gerard Delfgaauw  under the name 'Port of Rotterdam'.

  • Pseudonym

Because he wanted to preserve the quality of his work, the story goes that Delfgaauw painted for a short time under the pseudonym H. van Gessel, although it is also likely that the art dealer himself signed the paintings as such.

You can read more about this on de websiteby GJJA Delfgaauw, son of the painter.
