29 x 56 cm

  • Port of Vlissingen

The painting by Hans Savery the Elder shows a maritime scene with several sailing ships on a turbulent sea under a cloudy sky.

The stylistic features of this work are typical of the Northern Renaissance

    Detailed view

A lot of attention has been paid to the detailed representation of the ships and the waves.

The use of light and shadow creates the dramatic atmosphere of a turbulent sea and bad weather conditions.

The sea and ships are depicted realistically, highlighting the artist's technical skill and observational precision.

The horizon shows a distant coastline with structures suggesting a port city, providing a historical view of Dutch seafaring in the early 17th century.

  • Hans Savery (1564-ca 1625)

Hans Savery, born around 1564 in Kortrijk, was a Flemish-Dutch painter who left a lasting impression on the world of maritime art. A member of the Savery family of artists, he stood out for his unique talent for capturing the power and beauty of the sea.

    Flemish-Dutch

Savery's life was a journey that took him from his birthplace in Flanders to Haarlem, where he settled around 1585. His work, mainly focused on seascapes, reflects a deep connection with the ocean and maritime life. One of his most notable works is a painting from around 1600, showing the East Indiaman Amsterdam and a number of warships. This work, which was acquired for 588,000 euros by the Dutch Maritime Museum in Amsterdam, is known as one of the oldest painted seascapes in the West.

    Mentor and source of inspiration

Savery's contribution to the art world goes beyond his paintings. He was also a mentor and source of inspiration for other artists, including his younger brothers Jacob and Roelant, who also made their names as painters. His life and work are a testament to the rich artistic tradition of the Low Countries and the influential role the sea played in the lives of the people during the 16th and 17th centuries.

    Legacy

Hans Savery's legacy lives on, not only in his paintings but also in the stories and history they tell. His art is a window to an era in which the sea occupied a central place in the imagination and reality of society. Hans Savery the Elder, as he is often called to distinguish himself from his cousin, remains an iconic figure in the history of Dutch and Flemish art.
