  • Impressionist painting

Elisee Maclet's painting 'Mill Galette' is a wonderful example of impressionism.

Clearly visible brushstrokes contribute to the painting's vibrant texture. The use of bright and vibrant colors enhances the dynamic look of the landscape. There is a strong emphasis on capturing light and its changing qualities, which is typical of Impressionism. Instead of detailed precision, Maclet focuses on conveying the mood and feel of the scene.

    Montmartre

'Le Moulin de la Galette' itself is a historic windmill that was an important social center in the 19th century. It was a place where Parisians gathered to dance, drink and enjoy life.

This windmill and the surrounding areas became a favorite subject for many artists, including Renoir and Van Gogh, who wanted to capture the lively atmosphere and character of Montmartre.

    Unique insight

Maclet's paintings are thus not only artistic creations, but also interesting historical documents that provide a unique insight into the life and culture of Montmartre in the early 20th century. His work is a celebration of the simple beauty of everyday life and the charm of Paris.

  • Elisee Maclet (1882-1960)

The artist Elisee Maclet emerged from humble beginnings as the son of a gardener and a laundress growing up in the Picardy region.

    Early years

Despite early financial hardships, Maclet's artistic prowess was apparent from a young age. Encouraged by his father, who doubled as the local church Sexton, and mentored by the parish priest and amateur painter Father Delval, Maclet honed his skills painting the pastoral landscapes of his hometown. His talent caught the eye of renowned artist Puvis de Chavannes, yet his father's refusal to let him study formally did not deter Maclet's pursuit of art.

    Paris

Defying his father's wishes, Maclet relocated to Montmartre, immersing himself in the bohemian art scene. To sustain his passion, he juggled various jobs, from cooking on a ship to painting dolls for exhibition. His work captured the rustic allure of Montmartre, predating the famous depictions by Utrillo. Despite his influence on contemporaries like Utrillo, Maclet's modest nature led to his understated legacy, known only through veiled references in historical records. His contributions to the art world include early renditions of iconic scenes like the Lapin Agile and the Moulin de la Galette, showcasing his unique perspective on the evolving Parisian landscape.
